GUM DISEASE is a group of conditions caused by bacteria that affect the tooth and supporting structures (which are the jaw bone, the fibers that hold a tooth in the bony socket, and the gum tissue itself).

Gum Disease occurs when the amount of bacteria overwhelms the bodies ability to defend against it. Reduce the bacteria, reduce the disease.

Gum diseases are broadly classified into GINGIVITIS and PERIODONTITIS. GINGIVITIS is inflammation of the gums. It is very common in adults and children. Gingivitis is a reversible and curable condition characterized by tender, swollen and sensitive bleeding gums.

PERIODONTITIS is a much more serious condition also caused by the presence of bacteria. It is characterized by inflammation that spreads from the gums into the underlying supporting structures (the jawbone and the fibers that hold the tooth in the socket). This results in a non-reversible loss of the jawbone and socket fibers. Also, bacteria and the toxins they produce ulcerate the gum wall and enter the bloodstream. The bacteria now cause inflammation in the walls of arteries and organs. The result is that people with periodontal disease are much more susceptble to heart attacks and strokens. Pregnant women are more likely to have a premature birth with a lower birth weight baby.  Periodontal Disease complicates Diabetes and is implicated in Arthritis and a host of other systemic diseases. It has been theorized by respected researchers that Periodontal Disease tends to decrease life expectancy by 6 years.

If you have been diagnosed as having gingivitis or periodontitis, do yourself a favor and buy an oral irrigator, use it daily, and remember to see your dentist and hygienist routinely. The benefits of doing these things are exponential!
